Description

This dataset contains whole-slide images of human ascending thoracic aortic tissue obtained as surgical waste from four patients who had undergone open-heart surgery, stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), Elastica van Gieson (EvG), and multichannel immunofluorescence (DAPI, CD31, VE-cadherin). The brightfield slides are 30 files in SVS format, and the fluorescence images are 12 files in VSI format. The use of donor specimens was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Medical University of Graz (approval number 32-451 ex19/20).

The tissue was tested in a custom biosafe ex vivo platform that combines multiaxial mechanical loading with a commercial bioreactor, which allows mechanical testing and viability preservation of native tissue at the same time. The images document tissue structure (elastin and collagen architecture, cellularity) and immunofluorescence markers in stented, stretched, and control groups at 0 h, 24 h, and 48 h.

The data can be used to reproduce and extend the image analysis of the related publication, including collagen-to-elastin quantification, cell counting, and normalized fluorescence quantification, and to develop and benchmark segmentation and classification methods for arterial histology.

The following files are included:

  1. Raw whole-slide images: 30 brightfield slides (SVS) and 12 fluorescence images (VSI)
  2. Description table of all slides (WSI_DescriptionTable.csv)
  3. README file with specimen processing, staining protocols, antibodies, scanner parameters, file-format notes, and contact information
