Abstract

With the ongoing electrification of passenger and commercial vehicles the transition from hydraulic or pneumatic to electromechanical brake (EMB) systems becomes attractive. This new kind of braking system promises advantages, as it removes bulky hydraulic or pneumatic components, enables fast wheel individual brake actions and integrates seamlessly with the X-by-wire paradigm, but it also poses new challenges which need to be overcome. To enable the reliable operation of EMB systems, exact knowledge about system parameters which can be uncertain due to manufacturing imperfections or vary over the components’ lifetime due to aging and wear, is essential. In this paper we develop a method to estimate a set of critical system parameters. The focus is put on parameters which are relevant for control and wear detection of the electromechanical drum brake actuator. A simplified model of the actuator mechanism and an input signal which avoids the excitation of unmodelled effects are proposed. The admittance-based parameter estimation method is derived analytically and assessed on a prototype drum EMB. Additionally, the estimated parameters are compared to the results of a simulation optimization-based approach.
