Buddhist Architecture in the Western Himalayas_Dimensioned plan drawings of Tholing

Description

For more than two decades and within the framework of various field research projects, an extensive collection of research material on Buddhist architecture in the Western Himalayas has been compiled at Graz University of Technology. The material documents individual temples, temple complexes and votive buildings associated with the second wave of the spread of Buddhism in Tibet from the 10th century onwards.

These preserved buildings are the most significant source for architectural research as well as other fields of research and scholarship, such as Art History and Tibetology. The research results are intended to elucidate the contextual relationships and particularities of Buddhist architecture in Nepal, northern India and western Tibet. They contribute to creating a comprehensive typology of early Buddhist architecture in the Western Himalayas.

In addition to the material provided on our website, we provide dimensioned plan drawings of selected examples, hence making the architectural documentation more accessible to a broader audience.
